Class A Grp 2

Class A- Group 2 : Monica De Moya, Maria Laura Dietsch, Mariluz Troncoso,Ceaser Herrera, Jesus Piniella

Big Six Framework (An information problem-solving approach)
[
1-Task Definition] - [2-Info Seeking Strategies] - [3-Location and Access] - [4-Use of Information] - [5-Synthesis] - [6-Evaluation]

1- Task Definition:
(1.1-Define the Problem)
The problem is... We need to figure out much energy the country  will save if all the Dominicans change at least1  florecent  light bulb to CFL. We need to try to lower the demand of energy instead of raising the production by using florecent bulbs ,because the light bulb uses less energy and the light bulb lastes 10 times as longer , therefore we will lower energy air pollution. Also we need to find out how much Co2 we can prevent from polluting our atmosphere, causing global warming and then measure how many CMS gyms is t in terms of volume. The demand is so high its polluting our atmosphere every day more and more. It is also decreasing the dominican economy. We are also wasting money building more coal factory while we can invest that money in education and things needed in the Dominican Republic, we will do this by lowering the demand. Another thing that is affecting the DR, is that we are increasing the production and that money is going to China because the company that buil;d the power plant is China and we pay them for building our power plants. If we lower the demand that money will stay here and the money that stays here we can use it for things needed inthe Dominican Republic, and their wouldn't be so many poor people, and we will be able to help the people of this contry.

(1.2-Information needed to complete the task)

What is the average time a light bulb is on every day?

How much energy is consumed by an incandescent light bulb every day?

How much energy is consumed by a CFL light bulb every day?

How mnay days are in a year?

How many Dominicans are there?

How much carbon dioxide is generated to produce electricity?

How mch volume does carbon dioxide occupy?

What is the volume of the CMS gym?

2-Information Seeking Strategies:
(2.1-Possible Sources)

Some posible sources are...

-OBB Dominicana

-Comicion Nacional de Energia

-OBB bulletin board

-(http://listindiario.com.do/app/article.aspx?id=25806 , http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=cfls.pr_dfs, )

(2.2-Select the best sources)

-OBB Dominicana

-Comicion Nacional de Energia

-OBB bulletin board

3-Location and Access
(3.1-Locate sources)

(3.2-Find information within sources)

What is the average time a light bulb is on every day?

As observed by clas A group 2, an average of about 10.79 hours

How much energy is consumed by an incandescent light bulb every hour?

100 W

How much energy is consumed by a CFL light bulb every hour?

25 W

How many days are in a year?

365.25

How many Dominicans are there?

9,183,984

How much carbon dioxide is generated to produce electricity?

1kwh of electricity produces 0.649 kg of CO2 gas

How mch volume does carbon dioxide occupy?

1 kg of CO2 = 123.86 m3 (at sea level)

What is the volume of the CMS gym?

H= 8.75m

W= 19.25m

L= 41m

h= 1.75

The gym is made of a triangular prism and a rectangular prism. The volume of a rectangular prism is area of the base * height. The volume of the triangular prism is area of the base * height / 2

Volume of triangular prism:

41 * 19.25 = 789.25

789.25 * 1.75 = 1,381.1875/2 = 690.59375 m3

Volume of rectangular prism:

789.25 * 8.75 = 6,905.9375m3

Volume of the gym: 690.59375 + 6,905.9375 = 7,515.5013 m3

4-Use of Information
(4.1 Engage in the source (read, listen, view, touch) Ask for help if you don't understand something.)(4.2 Find the important stuff. Take notes.)

Notes: Powerhouse.com-Energy used in the averge home can be responsible for more than twince the greehouse gas emissions of the averge car. When you use  less energy at home , you reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants and help protect our enviorment from the risks of global climate change. This site is very useful because it can be a way to prove people that CFL are better and that they should use them.

5-What did you find out about all the tasks? Present it here. Use hyperlinks, pictures, tables, etc. to make your findings clearer.

What we found out was that  if every dominican changed a bulb we would save...

Dominicans/amount of light bulbs changed Incandescent bulb(100w)

CFL bulb (25w)

9,183,984

9,183,984 * 100 = 918,398,400W

918,398,400 * 10.79 = 9,909,518,736W

9,909,518,736W * 365.25 =

3,619,451,718,324W / 1000 =

3,619,451,718.324 KW

9,183,984 * 25 = 229,599,600W

229,599,600 * 10.79 = 2,477,379,684W

2,477,379,684W * 365.25 =

904,862,929,581W / 1000 =

904,862,929.581 KW

3,619,451,718.324 - 904,862,929.581 = 2,714,588,788.743 KW per year

We also found that changing the light bulbs would prevent CO2 from going to the atmosphere.

2,714,588,788.743 * 0.649 = 1,761,768,123.894207 kg of CO2 wouldn't go into the atmosphere.

1,761,768,123.894207 * 123.86 = 218,212,599,825.5364 m3 of CO2 wouldn't go into the atmosphere.

Since the volume of the CMS gym is 7,515.5013 m3 then about 29,035,002.6052 CMS gyms full of CO2 would be saved each year.

What should be done?

People should be encouraged to change incandescent to CFL light bulbs because a lot of energy would be saved, a massive amount of CO2 would be prevented from going into the atmosphere and producing global warming, and a great amount of money could be saved.

6-How would you rate the quality of your solution? What areas, if any, need more attention?

We think our solution is excellent althogh there might be some wrong calculations. We might have worked with more effort on questions 1.1 and 3.1. We could have laso worked better as a group and reached our conclusions sooner.
