Big Six Framework (An information problem-solving approach) [1-Task Definition] - [2-Info Seeking Strategies] - [3-Location and Access] - [4-Use of Information] - [5-Synthesis] - [6-Evaluation] |
1- Task Definition: (1.1-Define the Problem) (real-world problem)
The problem we are facing is that the amount of energy that we are demanding is lower than the amount we are producing. This leads to the need of build polluting power plants. This power plants burn coal which is very expensive and harmful to the environment. Pollution leads to global warming and damaging of our fauna and flora.

information problem:
We need to investigate how much energy we would save in kWh every year if every Dominican were to change one of their incandescent light bulbs for a CFL bulb (100w to 25w). How much CO2 would this prevent from going into the atmosphere? In terms of volume, how many CMS gyms is that? We also need to investigate if we would need to build another polluting power plant.
(1.2-Information Complete the task) (Info problem).
- Population of the Dominican Republic. -How long the lightbulbs are on. -Volume of CMS gymn. -Amount of energy in KWh. -Amount of bulbs changed per person. -Money used for powerplant. -Amount of pollution the D.R. produces per year with the incandescent light bulbs. -Electrical demand. -Amount fo energy saved.

2-Information Seeking Strategies: (2.1-Possible Sources)
Websites:
-Wikipedia
-EBSCO
-OBB
-Altavista
-Unit Converter
Papers:
-Hoy -Listin Diario -Diario Libre -La Clave -El Dia
People:
-Mr. Farren -Mrs. de Castro -Mrs. Mera
(2.2-Select the best sources)
-Unit converter -OBB -Teachers
-Parents -CNE booklet -www.cne.gov.do
|
3-Location and Access (3.1-Locate sources)
-www.cne.gov.do -www.cflbulbs.com -www.ebsco.com -www.energystar.gov -www.popularmechanics.com -http://www.getrichslowly.org/blog/2007/10/29/how-much-do-compact-fluorescent-bulbs-really-cost/
(3.2 Informationm found within the sources)
-How much carbon dioxide is generated when electricity is produced.
-The amount of volume carbon dioxide occupies.
|
4-Use of Information (4.1 Engage in the source (read, listen, view, touch) Ask for help if you don't understand something.) (Find the important stuff. Take notes.) Notes:
-The average time of the light bulbs on. - This chart shows how much energy is demanded(blue line) and the amount we produce (red line). - The amount of energy saved which is 688,798,800 watts - There are 9,183,984 people in the Dominican Republic

|
5-What did you find out about. Use hyperlinks, pictures, tables, etc. to make your findings clearer.
-Gymn measurements: ~Area: 854 ~Width:19.25 M ~Length: 41 M ~Height: 8.95 ~Triangle: 1.5 ~Area: 789.25 -We found the area by timing the Length (41) times the width (19.25)

-We found out that even though CFL bulbs are more expensive overtime you will save more than by buying an incondecent bulb.
-We learned how to use the metric system. (Meters, volume, area etc.)
-By using CFL bulbs we will possibly not have to build another powering plant.

-We found out the average time 3 incandecent lightbulbs were on in each of our houses and the total average of all 12 lightbulbs. They were on for a period of 24 hours. We got this information by adding up all our lightbulb's hours and then averaging them.

-Calculations of amount of KWh saved with incandecent and CFL bulbs.

6-How would you rate the quality of your solutions? What areas, if any, need more attention?
|
-We would rate this whole investigation with a 7. This is mostly because a few of our calculations, at first, weren't correct and because some of us tended to loose our concentration. -After we got our act together we checked our answers and they are mostly accurate. -When finding the total hours the lightbulbs where on we struggled a bit at first, since some of our hours didn't make much sense. In the end we figured it out and averaged it brilliantly! -We certainly needed more attention in the concentration area. Some us tended to slack off and goof around, which distracted the rest of our group. |
