Big Six Framework (An information problem-solving approach)
[1-Task Definition] - [2-Info Seeking Strategies] - [3-Location and Access] - [4-Use of Information] - [5-Synthesis] - [6-Evaluation]

1- Task Definition:
(1.1-Define the Problem)
The problem that we, Dominicans, are facing is that the electrical demands of the people are higher than the electrical production being issued. These problems affect our economy by the money money-mouthgoing to other countries to pay for the coal used and oil used in the production of electricity. This dirty production of electricity (for example using coal and oil) also affects the global warming that is destroying parts of the world right now. If this problem is not fixed our economy will lose money because of the necesity of building a new $800 million dollar power plant to increase production. We will use more coal to increase production and this will send so much CO2 into the atmosphere that our pollution rate will increase by  very much.

Our information problem has to do with pollution and savings in kWH hours. We will try to find out how much energy we would save in kWH every year if every Dominican switched just one normal lightbulb to a compact fluorescent bulb. Would the Dominican government have to build another $800 million dollars polluting power plant? We will also try to find out how much CO2 would be prevented from going into the atmosphere each year. In terms of volume we will find out how many of our CMS gyms that is.

(1.2-Information needed to complete the task)

-We would need to find out the population of the Dominican Republic

-The average hour a bulb is turned on during a day

-The number of days in a year

-The difference of energy use between a normal bulb and a CFL (compact fluorescent bulb) and the life of the bulbs.

-We would also have to find out how much CO2 is prevented from going into the atmosphere by checking the amount of coal and oil used for a compact fluorescent bulb instead of a normal bulb (in terms of volume).

-We would have to find out the volume of a CMS gym.

2-Information Seeking Strategies:
(2.1-Possible Sources)
-The Dominican Government (CNE)

-Ruler

-OBB Dominicana

-EBSCO

-CIA

-The American government

-Guia para ahorrar energia 1, 10 and 8(CNE)

-OBB Bulletin Board

(2.2-Select the best sources)

-Guia para ahorrar energia 1,10 and 8 (CNE)

-OBB Bulletin Board

-OBB Dominicana

-The Dominican Government (CNE)

-CIA

-Ruler

3-Location and Access
(3.1-Locate sources)

-CIA-www.cia.gov

-OBB Bulletin Board-http://wekey.wiki.zoho.com/OBB-Bulletin-Board.html

-OBB Dominicana-http://wekey.wiki.zoho.com/OBB-Dominicana.html

(3.2-Find information within sources)
-OBB Bulletin Board- 1kg of CO2 equals 123.86 m3 at sea level

1KWH  of electricity produces 0.659 kg of CO2

-CIA- The population of the Dominicans in the Dominican Republic is 9,365,818

- CFL and Incandescent light bulb comparison -

Q. Don’t CFL’s cost more?

A. Although a single CFL costs more initially, over the life of the bulb you actually save money. Here’s a comparison of costs based on 10,000 hours of light (nearly 7 years if the light is on 4 hours per day)

4-Use of Information
(4.1 Engage in the source (read, listen, view, touch) Ask for help if you don't understand something.
(4.2 Find the important stuff. Take notes.)
Notes:

Bulb Average for Luis- 3h 7 minutes

Bulb Average for Rosa- 8h 6 minutes

Bulb Average for Sofia- Absent

Bulb Average for Cristina- Absent

Bulb Average for Huascar- 5 hours

Average for all 3 bulbs = 5h 8 minutes

5-Organize your information and present it. Use hyperlinks, pictures, tables, etc. to make your findings clearer.
What did you find out?

We found out that we saved 1,297,259,451.18 KWH per year when we took away the number of Incandescent bulb KWH from the number of CFL KWH's.*

*2This number we multiplied by 0.649 which is the kilograms of CO2 released into the atmosphere for each kilowatt hour, this gave us 841,921,383.81582. This is the kilograms released of CO2 into the atmosphere. This number we multiplied times 123.86 which is the space one kilogram of CO2 takes up at sea level. We got 104,280,382,599.4274652. This is the m3 that the CO2 released into the air takes up. We divided 104,280,382,599.4274652 by 7,276.5 which is the area of the CMS gym. This made us find out how many CMS gyms the CO2 released into the air would take up. 14,331,118.339782514285714285714286 CMS gyms being filed up of CO2. We rounded this up to 14,331,118 CMS gyms filled up by the CO2 released into the air.

With our calculations in the top table we found out that if we converted our KWH saved per year by 1,000,000,000 we got our number of GWH saved. This is the number of GWH saved per year in the D.R. 1.29725945118.

With our solution we would still have to build a power plant, but we shouldn't. Think about this, this is just one bulb per Dominican, imagine if every Dominican changes more than one bulb. Changing more than one bulb will make us all richer and the country less polluted. With a proper time span and the proper number of bulbs changed our demand will go down and meet our production and we won't have to waste $800 million dollars on a new polluting power plant.

What should be done?

What should be done in this situation is to get the people of the Dominican Republic to buy more CFL bulbs that will lower the demand and will save people money this can be achieved by making comercials, ads ect.  In order to achieve this the government should set up banners and comercials on TV and in popular magazines. The government should also ban Incandescent bulbs from parts of the countries were light usage is high. The government should issue comic strips in the newspaper and pamphlets about this situation. The government should also go to schools to educate kids about this situation so that kids will inform their parents and so that they now how to save energy and money when they grow up. This should be enough and our country will save money and energy and we will all be richer.

6-How would you rate the quality of your solution? What areas, if any, need more attention?

We would rate the quality of our solution high and effective. We would do this becasue we did everything how it was supposed to be done. We should pay more attention to the population of the Dominican Republic and to the number of hours a bulb is used per day because we based it on 4 people when every Dominican uses their bulb differently. The population should be watched because everyday it changes and so it is not perfect. Our solution is reliable and effective because we followed everything we needed to do and completed it fully.
